![]() These are themes and concepts I focus on incorporating within my own work. It could be in the form of taking a stand on an area of concern, and while doing so may not always be easy or comfortable, many of us have access to the spaces we are in and have the ability to speak up and out for others. Mentoring and being that formal or informal resource on a consistent basis is something that can be incorporated across ethnic background, gender, and other attributes, and can produce “win-win” scenarios for all involved as together, everyone achieves more. ![]() We need to think about this concept in our workplaces and other spaces. We think of advocacy when it comes to social issues. If we allow ourselves to be more open, we can better incorporate the best of what people “bring to the table,” and in doing so, have a far more encompassing reach with what we do.Īdvocacy. Ranging from applying atypical approaches to our instruction, engagement, work processes, or even communication, we have to understand our way may not always be the best way of doing things. Time and time again, we hear the term “best practices” that does have its space and place, but a better term may be “better practices.” It’s understandable to have some reservation about doing things differently from what you are used to, but if the now-normal is teaching us anything, the way we do things is subject to change. It’s about building someone up compared to tearing them down.Įmbrace multiple approaches. In the workplace or the classroom, it’s about meeting people where they are, identifying what strengths they bring to the proverbial table, along with understanding where they are trying to go. This is a seemingly easy concept to comprehend. Here are a few things to consider in having the constructive and critical conversations needed to support others in their personal and professional lives as well as to seek out the support that you need, not just in our “now-normal”, but beyond: How do we get there? How do we measure it? One of the components that empowers each of us to be successful is support, knowing that it too may vary how it looks from place to place, person to person. Remember that in life you can choose and change your actions - just also keep in mind that you're responsible for the consequences.ĭon't settle for a life that is only so-so.To be successful on an individual and collective level, professionally and beyond, is one of the goals people have. If you're not sure, just pick something you enjoy and see if you're willing to give up other activities to spend more time on it. This self-reflection will give you insight into what you're passionate about. Look at your life and highlight the things you love that you're willing to suffer for. The good news is when you pursue your passion, you'll not only like where you end up but enjoy the journey along the way. Great parents naturally do this when they have children and similar to raising kids, doing what you love is very hard work yet rewarding at the same time. This means making the conscious decision to give up other enjoyable activities to focus your energy on the most important activities. People who make a difference in their own lives and the world do so by following their passion. This new standard makes it easier to discern whether something is truly my passion or simply a strong interest. ![]() I use it to describe an activity, goal or cause that I care about so much that I am willing to suffer for it. I no longer use it to describe something that I feel strongly about or that excites me. This definition has changed my perspective on passion. ![]() The most famous example being the passion of Jesus Christ. It was only after reading Aspire by Kevin Hall and confirming with the dictionary, did I realize that "passion" originally meant:Ī Willingness to Suffer for What You Love When most people refer to "passion", they use it to mean strong emotions reflecting an intense desire or boundless enthusiasm (At least, that's how I've always heard it used). ![]() Passion is one of those words that people use often without really understanding the original meaning of the word. If you're still putting up with a mediocre life in hopes of getting something out of it at the end, please reconsider. Uncontrollable events like this happen all the time and they remind me of the fragile and fleeting nature of life and the importance of living it to the fullest now. My wife just shared with me a sad story about a woman getting killed in a freak accident while walking down the street in NYC. ![]()
